Tacoma WA
Artist: Kevin Anderson
On May 3, 2003, the Tacoma Art Museum opened its new building, a 50,000 sq.ft. structure designed by the critically acclaimed architect Antoine Predock The inaugural exhibition celebrated the core of the museum's mission the art and the artists of the Northwest.
The new art museum was inaugurated with an exhibition that showcased its dedication to Northwest artists, their art and our community. This event would be the museum's seventh Northwest Biennial, which was entitled - 'Building Wise.'
The theme for this biennial emerged from the many discussions the museum's staff had about moving into their new building. This theme addressed various issues relating to building, construction, and the emotional and social impact such a move would have. To help address these issues answer these questions, the Tacoma Art Museum asked Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, both internationally respected artists, to juror the exhibition.
Artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana were invited to submit work. Of the four hundred and seventy nine artists who submitted slides of their art, seventy seven artists were chosen to display their one hundred and eight pieces of art were chosen for the exhibition included two art pieces produced by Tacoma native, Kevin Anderson. |

The two sculptures by Kevin Anderson are a wry commentary on the drawbacks of home ownership, also known as the `American Dream.'
The collages refer to the unexpected headaches, never-ending chores, expenses, and surprises of maintaining a home. |

My hope is that people viewing this art, no doubt many of whom are home owners, will smile as they reflect on their own trials and
tribulations that come with home ownership |
